Match Report

With the rain clouds looming overhead, Penn kicked off against Brown at Memorial Field in Philadelphia. Brown came out strong and sustained early pressure but only earned three points for their efforts and on the ensuing kickoff, Penn began to build into the game, working the ball through the phases, with senior prop Matt Deluca barreling over the line for the first try of the match.

The wet pitch contributed to a scrappy first half and both sides very frequently penalized as they tried to earn supremacy at the ruck. In the 21st minute, Penn scrumhalf Andrew Martin found himself in the sin bin for a dump tackle on a Brown prop was ruled dangerous and an ensuing ruck penalty. Playing with 14 men, Penn continued to grow into the game and senior flyhalf Jonny Chia slotted his first penalty goal of the afternoon before Penn captain Mike Tully crashed over in the corner, sending Penn out to a 17-3 halftime lead.

Coming out in the second half, Penn continued to ride the momentum with a crushing maul leading to a try for sophomore lock Max Selig. A Brown try in the 49th minute brought the visitors within two tries, but when Sophomore hooker Michael Masciandaro scored to push the lead to 37-10, following two more Chia penalties, the result was decided. That did not stop Brown fighting back for two consolation tries sandwiched around another Penn penalty. The well contested match ended Penn 40 : Brown 24.
